Is life a code and what if it it is?

-

This is a thought that I had after having a discussion about racism with my friend. The discussion begun from a picture that I posted to my Facebook page. In the picture there were two children playing and there was a text saying “Nobody is born racist”. After the debate about is or isn’t someone born racist, it seemed very hard to say with 100% certainty, if that was the case or not. This was because my friend argued that racism is attributed to the DNA which we are given in birth not by influence of our surroundings or our up-bringing. He argued the racism is attributed to some sort of survival gene, which made us, according to him, naturally cautious to someone who is somehow not fitting to our own “heard”, meaning to the people we are bonded to when we are born. I was arguing that culture and society together with our up-bringing forms us to be racist against each other. However that is not the actual point of this post, because it opened the whole discussion of what actually is in our DNA.

The discussion got even more interesting when we started to discuss about DNA in the form that would be a factor in our behavior, that we receive already on birth that makes us behave in a certain way in some things in our life regardless of how we were raised, surrounding culture and society. You could for example argue that when we are seeking and selecting a partner for a romantic relationship, we would do the selection based on a certain attributes that the other person displays, that were actually “pre-selected” to us by our DNA.

If that would be the case, then wouldn’t it mean that we are actually receiving a string of “code” in birth, that we are bound to follow and it overrides other influence on the attributes stated in the code, so you are actually not able to change it in any way yourself later in life. As there are things that you cannot change in yourself even if you wanted, for example your sexual orientation could be seen as such a thing which would not be a personal selection that you decide for yourself.

How about, how would you feel about knowing what is written in the DNA, to know what your specific “settings” are, which are set to you on your birth? You could then compare your results with others to see how your DNA differs from someone others code. On the other hand that would also rise the question about who has “coded” your DNA, wouldn’t it? Wonder about could it be re-programmed, if you are dissatisfied on your specific code.

What about if you could somehow meet the “coder” of your DNA. What would you ask him? Would you ask him, why did you code me like this instead of something other? And could you build a “ticket”-system where you could place requests for upgrades and fixes to your code. Something like, could you please take a look at the issues in the Ticket-system in the 1st priority class and have them on queue to be fixed as soon as possible. The issues in the 2nd priority class could take, from my perspective, a few years. And the 3rd group in 10 years, rest if there is any open slots in the time after that.

You could continue to wonder this approach as far as you would want to, but I guess, that I will stop here.

Whether it’s career burnout, general aimlessness or a craving for a new path, most people will hear a call for a positive life change at some point in their lives.

This isn’t about the National Institutes of Health report that 16 million U.S. adults suffer from at least one major depressive episode each year, but rather about a healthy need to jar oneself out of a rut. What to do?

The case studies that follow offer excellent anecdotes that work. The key is to focus on the roots of your doldrums, recognize your power to get on the other side, and map out concrete action steps for moving through this phase and on to your greatness. If you find yourself in a rut, try these tactics to move forward.

The key is to focus on the roots of your doldrums, recognize your power to get on the other side, and map out concrete action steps for moving through this phase and on to your greatness.

  1. Identify the forces in your life that make you truly happy. Science finds that connection to loved ones, health (exercise specifically), and giving back are all closely connected to happiness. Create goals that include these themes.
  2. Focus on change. Write down the steps that you will take to move out of your rut. These might be specific things related to the results you want-for example, signing up for a class that introduces you to new people and experiences-but change can be found everywhere. Take a different route to work. Drink your coffee after breakfast instead of before. If you always tackle the elliptical machine at the gym, take on the treadmill. Buy an outfit that is outside of your comfort zone, or travel to new lands. Tackle a new skill that challenges your self-identity. Think of yourself as an introvert? Sign up for improv classes. Convinced you’re not athletically inclined? Enroll in tennis lessons. Are you a confident loudmouth? Go on a silent retreat.
  3. Get a goal buddy. This might mean asking a close friend, perhaps someone who also wants to make life alterations, or telling your entire network about your plans. Fear of public humiliation can be a powerful, positive force for adherence.
  4. Be open. You might start this journey with a clear idea of your desired outcomes. But if you do hard internal work and open yourself to the possibilities of positive change, even more amazing evolutions will be revealed. Stay nimble, and say yes.
